چکیده

– As parallel library standards make it easier to use networks of workstations for large computational jobs, concentration must be placed on the underlying communication mechanism used by the library. Also, with dynamic resource allocation schemes and task migration, it is now possible to move tasks in mid–execution to exploit architectures that offer faster communication networks. This paper describes the work involved in modifying Hector, our automatic resource allocation system for networked workstations, for dynamic communication mechanism switching and the overall performance gain that can be achieved with this addition. The ability to change the communication mechanism, for example, from Ethernet to shared memory in mid–execution, coupled with Hector, can optimize parallel program task placement to take advantage of the fastest available communication network.

1 Technical Report No . MSSU – EIRS – ERC – 97 – 17 Using Hector in an Architecture for Rapid Distributed Fault Tolerance

– Embedded high performance computing is being called upon to provide critical computing resources with increasing frequency. The ability to tolerate faults during operation, both maintaining operational capability and ensuring that correct results continue to be produced, is an important ingredient in mission–critical systems. An architecture for such a system is proposed, providing the abilit...

Evaluating California Local Land Use Plan’s Environmental Impact Reports

Local land use planning has profound impacts on environmental quality; however, few empirical studies have been conducted to systematically measure local land use plans’ environmental assessment quality and to identify the factors influencing it. This paper analyzes the quality of 40 Environmental Impact Reports (EIRs) of local jurisdictions’ land use plans in California. A plan evaluation prot...

Coordinating Multi-Transaction Activities

Data processing applications must often execute collections of related transactions. We propose a model for structuring and coordinating these multi-transaction activities. The model includes mechanisms for communication between transactions, for compensating transactions after an activity has failed, for dynamic creation and binding of activities, and for checkpointing the progress of an activ...

Power Considerations in Phased Logic Gate Design MSU Tech Report MSSU-COE-ERC-01-03

Phased Logic (PL) is a synthesis and mapping methodology that translates a standard synchronous gate-level netlist to a non-clocked netlist of special gates called phased logic gates [1][2][3]. In this paper the implementation of PL gates and the switched capacitance of phased logic systems is discussed. An analysis of the dynamic power consumption of a phased logic system reveals a major defic...
